
A network built for balance
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a cell-communication network present in all mammals. Its role is to help regulate homeostasis: the internal balance of temperature, appetite, sleep, pain perception, mood, immune response and many other functions. It was identified in the early 1990s while researchers studied how the compounds of the cannabis plant act in the body, and it has since become one of the most active fields in physiology.
The ECS has three components: the receptors that receive the signal, the endocannabinoids the body produces to activate them, and the enzymes that synthesize and break those molecules down.
CB1 and CB2 receptors
CB1 receptors are concentrated in the central nervous system: brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. They are also present in the lungs, vascular system, muscle, gastrointestinal tract, reproductive organs, immune system, liver, bone marrow and pancreas. CB2 receptors are linked mainly to the immune system and peripheral organs: spleen, bone, skin, immune cells, liver and bone marrow. Some tissues express both.
Endocannabinoids and enzymes
Anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are the two best-studied endocannabinoids. They are produced on demand, act locally and are quickly degraded by enzymes such as FAAH and MAGL. This on-demand behavior is what makes the ECS a fine-tuning system rather than a constant signal.
Where phytocannabinoids come in
Phytocannabinoids are the cannabinoids produced by the hemp plant: CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, THC, THC-V and others. They interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors and with related targets, which is why they have been studied for support in pain, sleep, mood, appetite, inflammation and neurological conditions. Each cannabinoid has a different affinity for each receptor, so the composition of a product matters.
